You will have received a student email from the University about remembering Richard Okorogheye. We are all deeply saddened by the news of his death, and we recognise that the circumstances around Richard’s death have made it a very difficult situation to process.

Lots of you have been in contact with the SU and the University to ask how you can pass on your condolences to Richard’s family, as well as coming together as a community to remember Richard and reflect on the loss of a member of our community.

The University have organised a number of ways in which you can do this:

  • If you would like to express your sympathies to Richard’s family, you can do this by submitting a message on this Google form, which will be put together into a book of condolence which will be passed onto Richard’s family. The form will be open until the 14th May.
  • The University Chaplain will be holding an online service of remembrance for Richard on Zoom on Monday 19th April at 12:00 noon. All students and staff are welcome. If you would like to participate in leading this or would like to say a few words, please get in touch. Register here: Register for the online remembrance service
  • There is a dedicated space for you to leave flowers, tributes and messages outside the main entrance to Brookes on the Piazza. Tributes will be left until the 26th April, after which the messages will be passed onto Richard’s family, as appropriate. Please be mindful in how you honour Richard’s memory - the cause of Richard’s death currently remains unconfirmed so we urge you to avoid speculation which could cause distress to Richard’s family.
  • If you would like to make a financial contribution to Richard’s family, his aunt has set up this fundraiser which you can donate to here:

    Fundraiser for Richard's family

(please note this fundraiser is not connected to the University or Students’ Union)

The University have said they will be exploring a physical commemoration for Richard, when the pandemic allows and in line with any wishes his family may have.

If you need support or would like to speak with someone, you can reach out to the University Multifaith Chaplaincy as well as University Wellbeing.
