Always think about how you plan on getting home before you leave home.

Think about getting a personal attack alarm. You can pick one up for free from the Union (while stocks last), or buy them online. These can be used to disorientate and shock an attacker, giving you vital seconds to escape.

Travelling on foot:

  • Try to stick to well-lit, busy streets and use the routes you know well.
  • Plan your route in advance and look confident.
  • Remain aware: avoid distractions such as your mobile phone or headphones.

 

Taxis:

  • Pre-book a local licensed cab so you know it will be coming at the end of your night.
  • Always carry the telephone number of a trusted, licensed company with you or make sure you have a suitable booking app on your phone.
  • Licensed taxis must display a white licence plate on the rear of the vehicle which gives the licence and registration number, type of vehicle and licence expiry date.
  • If you feel uneasy, ask the driver to stop in a well-lit busy place and get out of the vehicle.

 

Cycling:

  • Don’t take short cuts, even if you are in a hurry.
  • Dress to be seen - make sure your lights are in working  order and wear hi-vis.
  • Wear a safety helmet.
  • Keep your bike in good working order - you don’t want to have to try and repair it in the middle of the road.

 

Public Transport:

  • Plan ahead. Know when the last bus or train is, and where you will be catching it from.
  • If you feel uneasy, move to another seat or carriage. If you are alone on a bus at night, it may be safer to move to sit close behind the driver rather than on the upper deck alone.
  • Try to have your ticket, pass or money ready in your hand so your wallet is out of sight.
  • Wait for a bus or train in a well-lit location near other people if possible.
