How to get involved?

Join the Environmental Network

If you want to get involved in environmental campaigning at Brookes, this is the place. If you have an idea for environmental change or activism you'd like to see at brookes, we can both fund and support you to make it a reality.

Societies

We currently support a number of societies with an environmental focus:

Many of our societies also host sustainability-themed events or activities as part of their regular schedule. If you’re in a society, why not talk to your society’s committee about what you could do?

A few of the things we’ve changed so far:

  • Free water points on all campuses as part of the ReFill scheme;
  • We have a no plastic bag policy at Freshers’ Fair and union events;
  • We campaigned to introduce a dedicated coffee cup recycling scheme and to raise awareness with students and staff about the fact these can’t be recycled normally. Last year we diverted 178,000 cups from the waste stream ;
  • We mark events such as Fairtrade Fortnight or World Earth Day. We’ve lobbied to reduce single-use plastic on campus. (There’s still so much more to do on this though!)

Have you got an idea for a campaign or event you want to run? We want to hear from you. Email us on su.communications@brookes.ac.uk, drop us a message on Facebook or talk to one of the officers.

End of year recycling campaign

Every year we partner with the British Heart Foundation and Oxford Food Bank to reduce waste when you move out of halls. Keep an eye out for more information about this closer to the time.

Green Impact Plan

Green Impact is a United Nations award-winning programme designed to support environmentally and socially sustainable practice in your organisation. The Union will be working alongside the University towards a Green Impact accreditation. We’re just working on our Green Impact action plan, and will be publishing it here shortly. Sustainability at Brookes

Did you know Brookes was the first Fairtrade University?

“Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.” – (Fairtrade Foundation, 2019)
